What better to do then to take a look at the delicious collection of Anime for this Winter season. (2015)
I’ve taken the time to try and loosly group them categorically, that way those of you folks who only watch a specific genre can skip ahead to the sections that interest you!(Not that I’ve had that much success, some animes are just unclassifiable!)
FANTASY
Name: Kami-sama Hajimemashita 2 (Kami-sama Kiss 2)
Genre: Comedy, Modern Fantasy, Romance
Basic Premise: This is the second season of an anime about a homeless girl who finds herself thrust into the role of a deity at a local shrine. Pure, unadulterated shoujo concentrate
Name: Minna Atsumare! Falcom Gakuen SC
Genre: Fantasy, Comedy
Basic Premise: Another second season, this show follow a short-form anime about JRPG-style characters messing around in a JRPG fantasy-style world. Great for a few quick laughs
Name: Dog Days”
Genre: Fantasy
Basic Premise: This time a third season (We’ll get to new stuff at some stage I promise!) of an anime that follows a young lad pulled into a strange fantasy world where everyone looks human—except that they have animal ears and tails.
Name: Yuri Kuma Arashi
Genre: Fantasy, Comedy, Yuri
Basic Premise: In a world where humanity and a sinister race of bears are separated by a giant wall, a young school girl’s peaceful life comes to an end when the bears take her girlfriend! Expect a lot of Girls saying “Gao~”
Name: The Testament of Sister New Devil (Shinmai Maou no Testament)
Genre: Action, Fantasy, Ecchi
Basic Premise: Brown-hair McNoPersonality discovers his two new stepsisters are a demon lord and a succubus. Shenanigans ensure that he is their master and they both want to sleep with him. Worlds are saved etc.
Name: Absolute Duo
Genre: Action, Modern Fantasy
Basic Premise: On a burning quest for revenge, a young boy joins a school that teaches how to use your soul as a weapon. Instead of a weapon, his soul becomes a shield. How will he use his new-found powers?
Name: Yatterman Night (Yoru no Yatterman)
Genre: Superhero Fantasy
Basic Premise: A sequel to a long distant classic! In a beautiful twist, this anime follows the descendants of the original series’ villains in a future where it is the Yatterman who have become corrupt and only their eternal enemies have any hope of standing against them.
Name: World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman (Seiken Tsukai no World Break)
Genre: Fantasy, Action
Basic Premise: A lazy young protaganist enters a school (Japan seems to have lots of young men entering schools) full of students who gain either fighting or magical powers through remembering and channeling their past lives; He is unique however in that he is the first who has ever gained both types of powers.
Name: Maria the Virgin Witch (Junketsu no Maria)
Genre: Historical Fantasy, Comedy
Basic Premise: Set during the historical Hundred Years’ War period, this anime follows a young witch who, after using her magic to obstruct many fights because she hates both the British and the French’s constant fighting. She is cursed by the heavens as a result.
Name: Isuca
Genre: Action, Comedy, Modern Fantasy
Basic Premise: After a high school student gets a job as a house keeper, He helps a mysterious girl out with the chores and cooking because — get this — she can’t do those things even though she’s a girl! Isn’t that crazy? he accidentally lets loose a strange creature and must help her hunt it down. Also, he’s magic and doesn’t know it. (GASP)
Name: Death Parade
Genre: Dark Fantasy, Death Game
Basic Premise: My favourite anime of this season, provides similar vibes to shows like Jigoku Shoujo. When two people die at the same time, they don’t go to heaven or hell, rather they arrive at a bar where they must play a game with their lives as the wager, often resolving issues they faced together in life.
Name: Tokyo Ghoul √A
Genre: Action, Dark Fantasy, Horror
Basic Premise: The second season of an anime about a college student (Finally someone out of highschool!) who, after an accident at a construction site, finds himself half human and half man-eating ghoul. A very popular Shonen series, Tokyo Ghoul Builds an Emotional World of Horror and Violence
Name: Unlimited Fafnir (Juuou Mujin no Fafnir)
Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Ecchi
Basic Premise: In a world where “dragon-girls” suddenly appeared, the world’s strongest assassin, Yuu, just wants to be left alone. Yet he finds himself forced into a government school where all the girls are gathered to fight each other! Also, instant wives.
COMEDY
Name: Gourmet Girl Graffiti (Koufuku Graffiti)
Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life
Basic Premise: This charming anime follows a middle school girl who is amazing at cooking and uses her talent to make friends.
Name: Tantei Opera Milky Holmes TD
Genre: Comedy, Mystery
Basic Premise: The fourth season of an anime about a group of young girl detectives who share names with famous detectives from history. They solve crimes with their special powers.
Name: Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! (Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei Bu Love!)
Genre: Comedy, Magical Boy
Basic Premise: A group of slacker boys in the “High School Earth Defense Club” find themselves charged by a magical wombat to transform using ludicrous magical girl transformation sequences and save the world. As you can guess, doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Name: Military!
Genre: Comedy
Basic Premise: This is a short anime about a young boy who discovers that he, along with his household, has been strangely teleported into a land in the midst of a civil war when a rather inconvenient tank drives into his living room.
Name: Ketsuekigata-kun! Season 2
Genre: Comedy
Basic Premise: This is the second season of a short anime starring strange faceless people that each represent the stereotypical personality traits for each blood type. If you of course follow the belief that your blood-type dictates your actions, this comedy is for you.
Name: Pankis! 2 Jigen
Genre: Comedy
Basic Premise: Another short-form anime. This show follows a group of failing students at a school that is teaching them to balance and control sound.
Name: Assassination Classroom (Ansatsu Kyoushitsu)
Genre: Action, Comedy
Basic Premise: A high school class must kill their god-like, somewhat Cthulhu-ish tentacled teacher within a year or he will destroy the earth for some unexplained reason. The teacher seems to have much deeper motives then is first initially apparent however…
Name: Anime de Wakaru Shinryounaika
Genre: Comedy, Education
Basic Premise: This anime uses a cast of a doctor, nurse and their patients to educate the viewer about various mental diseases (such as Depression, Adjustment Disorder, and Asperger Syndrome) in a lighthearted and often comedic way. Worth a watch, as you’ll probably learn something along the way!
Name: Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend (Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata)
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Basic Premise: This anime follows a generic otaku and the girls he ropes in to help him make his own indie game. reminiscint of similar “Doujinshi” creation animes.
SCI-FI
Name: Aldnoah.Zero (Part 2)
Genre: Mecha, Sci-fi
Basic Premise: The second half of Aldnoah.Zero continues the dark story of a war between Earth and the technologically superior Mars. This show is a Dark Twist on the usual Gundam formula, if you missed the first part, go find it before watching this half.
Name: Doamaiger D
Genre: Action, Mecha
Basic Premise: A short-form anime where a sweets shop owner finds a giant robot under his store and uses it to fight the monsters that come to attack the city. The art style reminds me of old Super Robot anime of the 1970s and 1980s like Giant robo and parodies like Gekiganger 3
Name: Q Transformers: Kaette Kita Convoy no Nazo
Genre: Sci-Fi, Mecha
Basic Premise: A short-form chibi like Transformers anime based on an old 1986 Nintendo game. Watch it if you are a hardcore transformers fan
Name: Fafner Exodus (Soukyuu no Fafner: Dead Aggressor – Exodus)
Genre: Mecha
Basic Premise: The second season of an anime that follows a group of young adults who pilot giant robots against huge invading aliens in order to defend their home. Follows very similar tropes to the Gundam series of shows.
Name: KanColle (Kantai Collection)
Genre: Action, Sci-Fi
Basic Premise: Based on the hit Japanese browser game, this anime follows a fleet of anthropomorphic World War II ships and their commanding admiral.
Name: The Rolling Girls
Genre: Sci-Fi, Post Apocalypse, Slice of Life
Basic Premise: Set in a world where each prefecture in Japan has declared Independence in the aftermath of a war, shattering the country, four girls travel Japan for the sake of humanity, peace, and the world. Animated by the same studio who does Attack on Titan
ACTION
Name: Samurai Warriors (Sengoku Musou)
Genre: Historical Fiction, Action
Basic Premise: Based on the expansive Samurai Warriors game series, this anime takes place at the end of Japan’s Warring States Period, when Japan is on the cusp of unification under one man. Filled with cool martial arts and weaponry battles.
Name: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders – Egypt Saga
Genre: Fighting, Action
Basic Premise: The continuation of the story of a mysteriously superpowered delinquent and his quest to kill an immortal vampire that has haunted his family for three generations. Super over the top Shonen battle stuff.
Name: Durarara!!x2
Genre: Action, Mystery
Basic Premise: This is the second season of Durarara!! , an anime that tells the tale of several supernatural people living in Tokyo and their various interactions. It’s difficult to describe the intricate layers of storytelling and character development this show weaves. If you haven’t watched the first season… go do it now!
SPORTS
Name: Kuroko’s Basketball Season 3 (Kuroko no Baske 3)
Genre: Sports
Basic Premise: Errr… I don’t know… sports anime aren’t my thing… but the internet says this is the third season of an anime about a high school basketball team on the road to becoming the best. or something like that… Enjoy if that’s your kettle of fish.
IDOL/MAGICAL GIRL
Name: Shounen Hollywood -Holly Stage for 50-
Genre: Idol, Slice of Life
Basic Premise: The second season of an anime about a (surprisingly refreshing) all-male idol group working hard to make it big in Hollywood.
Name: Go! Princess Precure
Genre: Magical Girl
Basic Premise: The twelfth Precure anime series follows three middle school girls attending a boarding school who gain the power to become Princess Precures. Definitely your thing if you’re a fan of the “Sailor moon” formula
Name: The IDOLM@STER: Cinderella Girls
Genre: Idol, Music
Basic Premise: The newest installment in the Idolmaster series. This show is based on the mobile phone game of the same name. The anime follows a producer and the prospective idols he manages and their stories.
